“The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent, and that’s power. Because they control the minds of the masses.” – Malcolm X
I’m interested in political philosophy, but I never followed the news. I tried to read the newspapers and stay up to date with what’s happening, but it just seemed that news depend on the source. They weren’t hard facts like the science I’ve been immersed in all my life – the news is only true because someone said so and you believed it. It’s all about the point of view from which the story is reflected.
The current situation in my country forced me back into reading and following the news. The main problem is this: who the fuck is right and who is wrong?
Our newspapers reek from the smell of ass they repeatedly kiss. What the fuck is going on? Something must’ve happened, right? (Just google Qatar).
News are stories, and stories can be altered according to perspectives and beliefs. In the Lion King, we saw the scene when Scar fucks up Mufasa to his death. We all believed Scar was the bad guy, but that’s only because the writers of the story and the animators intended for it to be so.
But what if, in another story line, Mufasa is portrayed as the dictator, misogynistic, egotistical asshole? What if Scar was the national hero who got rid of the dictator and brought democracy to the kingdom? Why is Simba worthy of leadership when he’s clearly the pampered son of the egotistical king?
Aladdin, although a thief, is also the good guy. But what if he was a homeless thief who kidnapped the Sultan’s daughter and asked for ransom? I mean, the Sultan did live in a huge palace guarded by his army while his people starved on the streets, right?
In Breaking Bad and Narcos, for example, I was able to root for both Walter White and Pablo Escobar, respectively, without a hint of guilt. I wanted Heisenberg to win, and even though I knew Escobar is going to die, I wished he wouldn’t.
All I’m wondering is this: do we ever know the complete truth? Or do we just pick up the pieces of the puzzle and arrange according to what makes sense to us? Based on what?
